BMW Is Rolling Out Semiconductor Upgrades And Key Setups

BMW is upgrading its i4 eDrive35 and eDrive40 models with silicon carbide (SiC) inverter technology beginning July 2025. This change boosts efficiency—around a 4.5% reduction in power consumption—and adds up to 22 km of extra WLTP range.

The company is expanding its Digital Key / Digital Key Plus across multiple model lines:

From July 2025: Digital Key becomes standard on iX (since March), 1 Series, 2 Series Gran Coupé, 2 Series Active Tourer, X1, X2, 5 Series Sedan & Touring, M5 (Sedan & Touring), and 7 Series.

By August 2025: Extended rollout to X5, X5 M, X6, X6 M, X7, and XM; in the U.S. and South Africa, the X3 receives updates in August (US) and September (SA).

The Setup Card + Service Card system simplifies pairing with smartphones (up to 18 devices), supports role-based access, and enables parental limits.

Efficiency gains: The SiC inverter upgrade delivers more effective energy use and extends driving range—especially appealing to i4 owners.

Seamless access: The Digital Key experience is becoming more accessible—streamlined setup, secure sharing, more model coverage, and improved control features.
