Did Bryan Acheampong Truly Bankroll Bawumia’s New Patriotic Party Flagbearership?

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia || Bryan Acheampong

According to a contentious comment purportedly made by former Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, he personally funded Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to be the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Acheampong allegedly “paid every single amount” needed to ensure Bawumia’s win in a video that went viral on X. The former Minster added that, he also allegedly contributed up to $1,500 to each constituency executive in the Eastern Region to guarantee their support.

Serious concerns have been raised by the allegations regarding the NPP’s internal elections’ transparency as well as the wider role of money in Ghanaian politics. Particularly as the NPP’s presidential elections draw closer, such disclosures are expected to provoke intense discussion in both political and civil society sectors.

Bawumia Apologizes For NPP’s Shortcomings. Commits To Doing Better

Neither Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team nor the NPP leadership have yet to officially address the comments. Ahead of their significant general elections, analysts think the allegations could erode trust in the party’s democratic procedures.

The New Patriotic Party has numerous presidential candidates, including Bryan Acheampong. Such remarks are expected since each of them is running for office.
