GOIL To Expand LPG Infrastructure With 12,000 New Storage Capacity

With a $5 million investment, GOIL PLC, Ghana’s top domestic oil and gas marketing company, has revealed intentions to expand 12,000 metric tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage capacity over the course of the upcoming year.

At the Africa Energy Week (AEW) 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa, Edward Abambire Bawa, the Group CEO and Managing Director, revealed this during a panel discussion on “Monetizing LPG to Enhance the Value of the Barrel in Africa’s Inland Markets.”

According to Mr. Bawa, Ghana consumed 340 million kg of LPG in 2024, but the country’s current storage capacity barely meets demand for two to three weeks.

“This storage limitation is both a challenge and a prime investment opportunity. Expanding infrastructure is fundamental to unlocking the full monetisation potential of LPG, benefiting producers, distributors, and end consumers alike,” he stated.

The expansion is consistent with GOIL’s overarching infrastructure development objective. Recent projects include the opening of a polymer-modified bitumen terminal in Tema and the expansion of several Autogas stations across five regions, including Accra and Kumasi.

With more than 438 service stations around the country, GOIL presently provides fuels, LPG, and lubricants to a variety of consumer sectors while fostering strategic alliances and sustainable growth.

Mr. Bawa added that through carefully thought-out policies, more funding, and creative business models like digital payment systems catered to household cash flows, GOIL is dedicated to expanding access to LPG, particularly in rural areas.

GOIL demonstrated its growing energy portfolio at the Africa Energy Week 2025 show, emphasizing prospects in Autogas and its two LPG Cylinder Recirculation Plants in Tema and Kumasi.

These facilities give home consumers access to LPG in a safer, more economical, and cleaner manner. The corporation also highlighted its commitment to Ghana’s energy and infrastructure sectors by presenting the recently completed multi-million dollar bitumen factory in Tema.

Industry professionals also participated in the panel discussion, including Mohammed Amin Naderian of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Sebastian Wagner of DMWA Resources, and Sesakho Magadla, CEO of PetroSA, who shared perspectives on LPG monetisation across Africa.
