On July 16, 2025, former Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson discussed the ‘Pepper Spray’ incident in an interview on Asempa FM’s ‘Ekosii Sen’ program.
She claimed that she was carrying the substance in self-defense after receiving threats at the grounds during the tumultuous July 11, 2025, parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North. She especially brought up a 2024 event in which her son was stabbed while participating in a voter registration drive.
She clarified that she felt singled out during the rerun at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station, when she was attacked after being called by unidentified individuals, some of whom she knew to be members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
She went on to say that she has been extremely watchful ever since her 33-year-old son was stabbed, particularly as a prominent figure politician. She claimed that two of the unnamed assailants were carrying a rifle and a cutlass, so she was scared.
When she witnessed these men approaching her with what seemed to be weapons, including knives, during a violent altercation, Koomson said, she decided to use pepper spray on the spur of the moment to defend herself.
“We are going to finish you here today,” I heard them shouting”.
“I had to protect myself while they were rushing me because there was nowhere to go at that moment when over thirty of these guys were chasing me.” So I sprayed the pepper right away.
“O.B., I have always had the choice to protect myself wherever I go, including at the market, since my son’s event.”

She disputed allegations that she had come to the voting place with the intention of causing disturbance, stating that she was there to back Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the candidate of her party, and that she had been forced to enter by police without her security detail.
