Rev. Charles Owusu, a governance advocate and former Head of Monitoring at the Forestry Commission, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to designate Richard Jakpa to spearhead the campaign against illicit mining, or galamsey, on May 23, 2025, during an interview on Peace FM’s morning broadcast.
Rev. Owusu said he has faith in Jakpa’s ability and that, given the task, he can deal with the problem successfully. He underlined that Jakpa should be given this duty if President Mahama is sincere about putting a stop to Galamsey.
In addition, Rev. Owusu restated his long-standing demand that the government create a Forest Protection Unit within the Ghanaian Armed Forces and designate all forest reserves as military zones.
