Boxing Great Joe Bugner Dies Aged 75

At age of 75, Fmr. Heavyweight Boxer Joe Bugner has passed away. The two-time former British, European, and Commonwealth champion sparred with some of the biggest names in his heavyweight period and faced Muhammad Ali, losing both bouts on points.

In his heyday, Bugner became the British, European, and Commonwealth champion in 1971 after defeating Henry Cooper on points.

The British Boxing Board of Control issued a statement confirming Bugner’s passing. It said:

“It is with great sadness that the former British, European, Commonwealth heavyweight champion and world championship contender Joe Bugner has passed away at his care home in Brisbane, Australia”.

“The British Boxing Board of Control passes on its condolences to Joe’s family.

Bugner won three major titles by defeating Cooper by a narrow margin after establishing his reputation with wins over Chuck Wepner and Brian London.

A points loss to Jack Bodell ended his reign, but Bugner bounced back and went the whole distance in a respectable defeat to Ali in Las Vegas in 1973.

Before losing a 15-round rematch with Ali for the WBC title in Kuala Lumpur in 1975, Bugner was also defeated on points by Joe Frazier in London later that year.

He lost to Earnie Shavers and Frank Bruno in subsequent bouts, but he would defeat reputable opponents like Greg Page and James Tillis.

Bugner finished his professional career with 69 victories, including 13 losses, 41 knockouts and one draw.
