This year, Ecobank—the premier pan-African banking group—celebrates its 40th anniversary, commemorating 40 years of financial innovation, service, and inclusion throughout Africa.
The Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce and Industry founded Ecobank in 1985 with the audacious goal of creating a premier African bank that is owned and run by Africans.
With operations in 35 African nations and millions of clients in the retail, commercial, corporate, and investment banking sectors, the Group has developed into one of Africa’s most prosperous financial organizations after 40 years.
Ecobank Group CEO Jeremy Awori gave a speech during the anniversary celebration at the Group’s headquarters in Lomé, Togo, where he discussed the bank’s history and accomplishments.
“For 40 years, Ecobank has been at the heart of Africa’s economic growth story. We’ve built a strong network connecting businesses and individuals across the continent, championed digital banking innovations, and remained committed to driving financial inclusion,” he said.
The milestone celebration, themed “40 Years of Connecting Africa”, was attended by dignitaries, regulators, staff, and partners from across the continent. It featured exhibitions showcasing the bank’s impact stories, technology evolution, and community initiatives over the years.
Ecobank has continuously positioned itself as a driver of African advancement, from developing innovative digital platforms such as the Ecobank Mobile App and Omni Lite for businesses to empowering SMEs and funding sustainable development initiatives.
Alain Nkontchou, the board chair, thanked the bank’s partners and clients for their faith and support.
“Our success over the last four decades is rooted in our shared belief in Africa’s potential. As we look to the future, Ecobank remains focused on driving innovation, supporting trade across borders, and empowering the next generation of African entrepreneurs,” he noted.
