Seasoned journalist and political commentator, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has made a strong case for severe punitive measures against individuals involved in the ongoing Bawku conflicts, stating that mediation and dialogue have been overused with little result.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show on Tuesday, August 5, Mr. Pratt expressed frustration over the continuous bloodshed and violence in Bawku, which has claimed dozens of lives and displaced many residents over the years.
“If anyone is found guilty of killing or committing any bloodshed-related crime in Bawku, they should be shot and killed or hanged to death,” Mr. Pratt asserted, adding that Ghana has tolerated such lawlessness for far too long.
He argued that the repeated reliance on mediation, negotiations, and peace talks has emboldened perpetrators and failed to bring lasting peace to the area. According to him, the time has come for the state to take decisive and unforgiving action to deter further violence.
Mr. Pratt also pointed fingers at some political actors, suggesting that politicians with vested interests in the Bawku crisis are fueling the conflict behind the scenes. He believes that harsh punishments will serve as a deterrent and force these individuals to back off.
“Let’s stop pampering criminals. If people know that the price for killing is death, the politicians behind it will step back,” he emphasized.
The journalist’s comments have since sparked mixed reactions on social media and among civil society groups, with some supporting his call for stronger deterrents, while others caution against bypassing due legal process and human rights norms.

The Bawku conflict, rooted in decades-long chieftaincy disputes and ethnic tensions, has proven difficult to resolve despite multiple peace efforts by successive governments.
Kwesi Pratt’s remarks have added to the national discourse on how best to address persistent violence in conflict-prone regions of Ghana.
