Kwabena Agyapong Not Happy With NPP’s Response To Kejetia Market Fire

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary and senior member Kwabena Agyei Agyapong has openly criticized party members who donated to the Kejetia Market fire victims.

Agyapong stated his criticism of these actions in an interview on May 19, 2025, on ‘Okay FM’s morning show.

According to Agyapong, he is concerned with the way or intent behind the NPP members’ contributions to the fire victims.

He said, the correct procedure was to gather all of these funds and give them to the party chairman, who would then contribute the money or items on the party’s behalf, as the party has done for many years.

He went on to say that, while they undoubtedly performed well by helping those affected in the fire outbreak, they might have strengthened the party by using the Party Chairman, and ideally by accompanying him to the contribution location.

“But they may have done that for personal gains. For the benefit of the Party, it would have been better the other way,” he said.

Under the leadership of General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, the NPP gave GH¢100,000 in March 2023 to help traders impacted by the Kejetia Market fire. In addition, GH¢100,000 was donated to aid the victims by Alan Kyerematen, who was the former Minister of Trade and Industry at the time.

Meanwhile, the recent donations were part of larger initiatives to aid those impacted by the fire, which destroyed numerous shops and goods at the market. However, there have been concerns regarding the disbursement and management of some of these funds.

For instance, tensions arose over an alleged missing GH¢200,000 donation from former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, with traders claiming they never received the funds.

Agyapong’s critique may stem from such controversies, suggesting that the donations, while well-intentioned, may have been mishandled or politicized, leading to further complications for the victims.

His comments highlight the need for transparency and accountability in the management of relief efforts to ensure that aid reaches those in need without becoming entangled in political agendas.
