In a recent interview on UTV, lawyer Kwesi Botchwey Jnr claimed that some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are actively involved in illegal mining, also known as galamsey, and are purposefully undermining the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources’ efforts. He claimed that the fight against illegal mining has grown more challenging because political actors, including members of the NDC, profit from the trade, and that these interests have resulted in systematic attempts to undermine the Minister’s mandate and thwart ongoing anti-galamsey operations.
“Some NDC members are directly benefitting from galamsey. Instead of supporting the government’s efforts, they are sabotaging the Minister, making it nearly impossible for him to carry out his duties effectively,” he alleged.
The lawyer noted that the lands and natural resources sector is a critical component of Ghana’s economy, but the menace of illegal mining continues to destroy water bodies, farmlands, and the environment. He warned that unless there is a bipartisan approach and political actors stop shielding perpetrators, Ghana risks losing its battle against galamsey.
He further urged the Lands Minister to remain resolute and not succumb to political pressures, stressing that the national interest must come before partisan considerations.

Lawyer Botchwey also called on civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and the general public to rally behind the fight, insisting that the government alone cannot win without collective action.
Meanwhile, the Lands and Natural Resources Minister has yet to respond to the claims.
