On August 10, 2025, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, a private legal practitioner and host of ‘Mmra Ne Abrabo Mu Nsem’ on Wontumi TV, has called for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), particularly its National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi, to issue a public apology to Ghanaians.
Speaking on his show, Ampaw referenced the recent plane crash that claimed eight lives, which he said had plunged the nation into grief. He argued that the tragedy had a profound impact on the NDC, as the ruling party, and suggested that they should learn a “bitter lesson” from the event.
Ampaw specifically criticized Sammy Gyamfi, Mali Basintale, and other members of the NDC Communications Team, alleging that when the NDC was in opposition, they rejoiced over similar tragic events and made inflammatory statements.
According to Ampaw, these statements included wishing death or harm upon NPP folks, especially former President Nana Akufo-Addo and other prominent figures in the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He urged the NDC to reflect on their past conduct and apologize to the nation, framing their alleged behavior as insensitive in light of the current national mourning.
He advised that, both the NPP and NDC Should desist from this ‘stupidities’, and rather focus on uniting the nation.
The remarks are consistent with Ampaw’s history of outspoken and often controversial commentary on Wontumi TV, where he frequently criticizes the NDC and defends NPP figures, such as Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi).
For instance, Ampaw has previously accused the NDC of targeting Wontumi’s businesses and engaging in politically motivated actions, as seen in his defense of Wontumi’s bail conditions in June 2025. His call for an apology may also reflect the ongoing political rivalry between the NPP and NDC, especially following the NDC’s return to power.
Ghana Bids A Big Farewell To Dr. Murtala Muhammed And Alhaji Muniru
Ampaw’s history on Wontumi TV includes several instances of controversial statements, often leading to public or institutional backlash. For example, in January 2024, Wontumi Multimedia issued an apology to the Kumasi Traditional Council for Ampaw’s “unacceptable” and “unruly” comments about Ashanti chiefs, which prompted a summons to Manhyia Palace.
The program was indefinitely suspended, and Ampaw himself retracted his statements, emphasizing respect for traditional authorities. Similarly, in June 2025, Ampaw criticized the NDC over the arrest of Chairman Wontumi, calling the GH¢50 million bail conditions politically motivated and warning of retaliatory measures if the NPP regained power.
These incidents highlight Ampaw’s role as a polarizing figure who uses his platform to defend NPP interests and challenge the NDC.
