Ghanaian actor William Addo, affectionately known as “Akpatse,” passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, at age 72 after a prolonged struggle with multiple health complications, including blindness resulting from unsuccessful surgeries.

News of his death has sparked widespread mourning across social media, with many Ghanaians paying tribute to his decades of influential work in theater, television, and film.

Addo became a household name throughout the 1980s and 1990s through his unforgettable performances on Ghana Television’s Thursday Theatre and various other productions, where his sharp comedic timing and remarkable versatility endeared him to audiences nationwide.

His notable film roles include Death After Birth (2011) as Mr. Asare, Chronicles of Odumkrom: The Headmaster (2015) as Opanyin Acheampong, and Children of the Mountain (2016). His talent also extended beyond Ghana’s borders; he performed internationally with the Trinity Repertory Company in Rhode Island, USA, during the 1985–1986 season.

A pioneer in Ghana’s performing arts industry, Addo served in several key leadership roles, including Director at the National Theatre, Director of Programmes at the National Commission on Culture, and lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Theatre Arts Department, where he mentored generations of actors and filmmakers.

In recent years, he spoke openly about his deteriorating health, particularly his loss of vision, and made public appeals for assistance with medical expenses. Family sources say he passed away peacefully on Saturday morning.

Funeral details are yet to be announced and are expected to be communicated by the family or official representatives. William Addo’s legacy as a cultural icon and beloved entertainer will continue to live on through his timeless performances.
