Kufuor Bitterly Complains About New Patriotic Party’s Treatment Of Him

John Agyekum Kufuor

John Agyekum Kufuor, the former president, has voiced his displeasure at not being engaged on significant NPP initiatives, particularly his exclusion from National Council meetings and other decision-making platforms.

Speaking with Bryan Acheampong, a 2028 flagbearer candidate and Abetifi MP, Kufuor said,

“My mind and memory are intact… At least keep me informed” and “If this party still has elders… I am one. Have I deteriorated to the point … No—I haven’t reached that stage yet”.

The former president expressed frustration, asking:

“And now… I’m being sidelined? Ignored? I don’t understand it. I really don’t. I’ve been quiet, but make no mistake, I’ve been watching. Closely.”

Kufuor emphasized his sacrifices throughout the decades and questioned why none of them called for being informed at all:

“Have I declined to the point where I can be dismissed, overlooked? My faculties are intact. I’m no relic.”

Deeper problems inside the NPP were exposed by Kufuor, including concerns about leadership succession and institutional memory, generational conflict, and the deference to elder statesmen.

He also talked about the sacrifices he made, such as being imprisoned after the 1972 coup, and how he helped lead the party through hardship to win two elections in 2000 and 2004.

NPP Is The True Definition Of Short Memory— ASEPA Director

According to sources, on Monday, July 14, 2025, the National Council met in emergency session after Kufuor formally petitioned the party over his exclusion.

Kufuor’s appeal will probably be discussed at the emergency National Council meeting scheduled for July 14.

The result might establish a standard for the NPP’s engagement with its older statesmen and maintains its founding ethos amid internal power dynamics.
