Over 390 Beaches Awarded For Their Golden Quality Water

The environmental group Quercus has awarded “Golden Quality” status to a total of 393 Portuguese beaches, the majority of which are coastal.

As per Quercus, out of the 393 awarded beaches, a sum of 327 are beach front, 56 inland, and the other ten are transitional. According to SchengenVisaInfo.com, the number of such beaches has decreased across the country in general in all regions.

The award was distributed significantly less to coastal bathing waters, where there were 32 fewer beaches, and to inland bathing waters, where there were 16 fewer beaches.

One of the largest declines has occurred in the North, and the Tagus and West regions were recognized for having the greatest number of award-winning beaches—98 in all.

There are approximately 45 beaches along the coast in the Azores, 32 in Madeira, and 74 in the Tagus and West. There are 47 beaches of golden quality in the north, 84 in the Algarve, and 24 in the center. Additionally, the Alentejo region has 21 beaches of this quality.

The environmental group clarifies that the “Golden Quality Beach” award is given out annually to Portuguese beaches that have excellent water for swimming. This acknowledgment depends on true open information and considers the outcomes acquired from research facility tests led by different Territorial Hydrographic Organizations.

The “Golden Quality” beach classification is granted for beaches that have bathing water of higher quality, such as “excellent” water quality, which is evaluated in the annual classification of five bathing seasons, with the latest one being in 2022.
