Prof. Vera Fiador Elected First Female UTAG National President

At the University Teachers Association of Ghana’s (UTAG) 22nd Biennial Congress in Aburi, with the theme “Rethinking Higher Education Pedagogy and Funding in the Age of AI: Ethics, Equity, and Development Impact,” Prof. Vera Ogeh Fiador, head of the Department of Finance at the University of Ghana Business School, was chosen as the organization’s new National President.

In her acceptance speech, Prof. Fiador pledged to “ignite a new paradigm of respect for academia by setting out a bold, practical, measurable agenda that makes the work of universities and academics unmistakably consequential to everyday life.”

She urged her coworkers to join her in transforming UTAG into a movement that combines honesty, bravery, and dedication to tangible outcomes.

Other executives include Dr. Samuel Segla as Secretary, Prof. Gladys A.A. Nabieu as Treasurer, Dr. Rosemary Anderson Akolaa as Women’s Commissioner, and Reverend Dr. Ebenezer T. Amanor-Lartey as Vice-President.

According to the terms of the UTAG Constitution, the newly elected executives will have a two-year term.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Amfo praised UTAG for its steadfast dedication to fostering academic excellence and furthering the cause of higher education in Ghana during her welcome speech.

She also emphasized important topics like the need to enhance pedagogy, the integration of technology into teaching and learning, and the ongoing worries about the wellbeing of teachers and staff. She asserts that in order for Ghana’s higher education system to stay competitive, these are crucial issues that require the combined attention of university instructors.

Prof. Amfo encouraged the association to continue providing leadership and to remain a strong voice in national conversations about the future of education.

In a closely related development, newly elected UG-UTAG Branch Executive Officers shall also begin their term of office from October 1, 2025, for a 2-year term.

They are Dr. Jerry Joe Harrison as President, Prof. Kofi Sarpong Adu-Manu as Vice-President, Dr. Godfred Bright Hagan as Secretary, Dr. Sarah Marjie as Women’s Executive Officer and Dr. Akua Boakyewaa Konadu as Treasurer.
